Question

<p><span>A </span><span>10.0 kg block on a table is connected by a string to a 78 kg mass, which is hanging over the edge of the table. Assuming that frictional forces may be neglected, what is the magnitude of acceleration of the 10.0 kg block when the other block is released?</span></p>

Explanation / Answer

Given that mass of the block on the table is m_1 = 10.0 kg

table is connected to the string mass is m _2 = 78.0 kg

T - m_1 g = m_1 a ......(1)

m _2 g - T = m _2 a ......(2)

from the above equations

m_2 g - m_1 g = ( m_1+ m_2 ) a

a = ( m_2 - m_1 )g / m_1 +m_2

       = ( 78.0 kg - 10.0 kg ) * 9.8 / 78.0 kg + 10.0 kg

         = 7.57 m/s^2
