Question
A car is driven east for a distance of 54 km, then north for 32 km, and then in a direction 35° east of north for 30 km. Draw the vector diagram and determine the total displacement of the car from its starting point.
I have found the magnitude (90.47km). Next, I am supposed to find the direction (counterclockwise from the east), so I used tan-1 (57.44/69.9)= 39.4 degrees. However, this answer is incorrect. Would someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? It would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks.
Explanation / Answer
First leg
x1 = 54
y1 = 0
Second leg
x2 = 0
y2 = 35
Third leg
cos 35
