Question
Exercise#2: To be manufactured a handbag needs to go through three main operations (leather cutting, zipper attachment and sewing) where a process time is required per bag. The firm has respectively 6, 2, and 1 machine for leather cutting, zipper attachment and sewing. Process Process Time Available Machines Leather Cutting (LC) 120 s 6 Zipper Attachment (ZA) 70 s 2 Sewing (S) 30 s 1 Leather cutting for one bag can be done by only one leather cutting machine for 120s, or can be processed over the 6 machines where it spend 20s on each machine. Same remark for Zipper attachment. The firm can organize the machines into possible layouts (1) sequential layout (see figure 1) and (2) parallel layout (see figure 2). For each of the two layouts answer the following questions: 1- Use a two axis grid, where X-axis is time and Y-axis is the machines, to describe to the production process over time for at least 3 items (use different color to distinguish the products). This can help you answering the below questions. 2- What is the throughput time? 3- Calculate the cycle time of all process steps (Cutting, Z attachment, sewing) 4- What is the cycle time of the whole process? 5- Identify the bottleneck machine?
