Question

a simply supported beam shown has a span length of 16 ft. the beam is laoded with to concentrated service live loads of 40 kips and 80 kips as shown. if lateral support is provided only at both ends, select the lightest w section of A992 steel that can carry these applied loads. neglect the weight of the beam.

Problem 2 A simply supported beam shown has a span of 16 ft. The beam is loaded with two concentrated service live loads of 40 kips and 80 kips as shown. If lateral support is provided only at both ends, select the lightest W section of A992 steel that can carry these applied loads. Neglect the weight of the beam (30 points) 80* 40 4. 4. 4

Explanation / Answer

Answer :

Reaction at left end of beam be able to be strong-minded from instant balance of right support.

response at left hold up = [(40*4)+(80*12)]/16 = 70 kips

Reaction at correct support=80+40-70=50 kips

uppermost moment in ray will be at the point where 80 kips load is drama

utmost moment in beam=70*4=280 kip-ft

LRFD level moment inside beam = 1.6*280=448 kip-ft

unbraced distance end to end of beam=16 ft

From beam table 3-2 of AISC, the lightest ray that has ability better than 448 kip-ft for unbraced distance end to end of 16 ft is W24x68. The immediate capapcity of W24x68 for unbraced length of 16 ft = 664-(664-404)/(18.9-6.61)*(16-6.61) = 465.3 kip-ft
