Question
Chapter 34, Problem 022 More mirrors. Object O stands on the central axis of a spherical or plane mirror. For this situation (see the table below, all distances are in centimeters; the given value of f is a magnitude with unknown sign), find (a) the type of mirror, (b) the radius of curvature r (nonzero number or 0 if infinity), (c) the object distance p, (d) the image distance i, whether (e) the image is real or virtual, (f) inverted or noninverted from O, and (g) on the same side of the mirror as object O or on the opposite side. Type f rP i R/V I/NI Side 17.0 +0.400 (b) Number (e) Number (d) Number Units Units Units CoExplanation / Answer
Solution:
a) As Magnification is positive we can say that the type of mirror will be convex Mirror
b) Radius of curvature = 2 x f
=> R = 2 x 17
=> R = 34 cm
c) m = -v / u
=> 0.400 = - i / p
=> 0.400 p = - i
Now using , 1/p + 1/ i = 1/f ( mirror formula)
=> 1/p - 1/ 0.4 p = 1/ 17
=> p = -25.5 cm
d) Image distance,
=> i = -0.4 x (-25.5)
=> i = 10.2 cm
e) v is positive image should be virtual
f) Noninverted
g) Opposite side of the mirror.
