Chlorine is added to drinking water in order to disinfect the water and kill microorganisms. List at least three sources of drinking water pollution. Discuss the impact of each contaminant on the environment (such as soil or groundwater). Discuss the techniques utilized in remediating each source of contamination.Explanation / Answer
The three major sources of drinking water pollution are,
1). Leaching of pains of water pipes
2). Leaks from the septic tanks are likely to pollute the nearby ground water and surface water, which causes pollution of drinking water.
3). Contamination of the river water and the other fresh water streams by the organic runoff from the agricultural lands and industries.
The following steps are helpful to prevent or reduce water pollution:
1). It is difficult to treat the river water if polluted. To prevent the river water pollution, the industrial wastes and house hold wastes must not be allowed to directly enter into the river water.
2). Preventing soil erosion by increasing the plant growth helps in prevention of water pollution due to soil erosion and sedimentation. The usage of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers must be reduced in the cultivation processes. Natural fertilizers and pesticides must be preferred instead of the synthetic ones.
3). The waste water must be pre-treated before releasing them into the seas and rivers.
4). Washing clothes and bathing of cattle in the water streams should not be done.
5). Water reservoir tanks, ponds and lakes must be cleaned from time to time
6). Insecticides and other waste drugs must not be poured in sinks and toilets.
