Question

6) A uniform-solid, cylinder of 5 cm radius is rolling along the floor with a constant speed of 80 cm/s. a) What is the rotational speed of the cylinder about its axis? b) What are the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of a point on its surface? e) c) At the instant a certain point on its surface is at the tip of the cylinder, what is the velocity of the point? Repeat if the point is at the contact with the floor. e Repeat if the point is midway between top and floor and at d) the forward surface of the cylinder. 2. (4) The cylinder runs over a sticky area of the floor with a kinetic coefficient of friction of 0.5? How long does it take to slow to a stop and how far does it roll?

Explanation / Answer

1. (a) w = v /r = 80 cm/s / 5 cm

w = 16 rad/s

(b) a = w^2 r = 16^2 (0.05) = 12.8 m/s^2

direction -> toward the center

(C) at tip,

v_tip = v + w r = 160 cm/s Or 1.60 m/s

(d) v = v - w r = 0

(e) v_mid = v = 80 cm/s

2. fk = uk N = uk m g

a = - fk/m = - uk g = - 0.5 x 9.8 = - 4.9 m/s^2

vf = vi + a t

0 = 0.80 + (-4.9t)

t =0.16 sec .....Ans

d = v0 t + a t^2/ 2 = (0.8 x 0.16) + (-4.9 x 0.16^2 / 2)

d = 0.068 m
