Question
Figure shows a 220 hamster sitting on an 750 wedge-shaped block. The block, in turn, rests on a spring scale.
a) Initially, static friction is sufficient to keep the hamster from moving. In this case, the hamster and the block are effectively a single 970 g mass and the scale should read 9.51 N. Show that this is the case by treating the hamster and the block as separate objects and analyzing the forces.
b) An extra-fine lubricating oil having µs= µk= 0 is sprayed on the top surface of the block, causing the hamster to slide down. Friction between the block and the scale is large enough that the block does not slip on the scale. What does the scale read as the hamster slides down?
Explanation / Answer
Mass of the hamster m = 220 g = 0.22 kg Mass of the wedge-shaped block M = 750 g = 0.75 kg Inclination of the wedge = 40 deg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) Initially the static friction is sufficient to the keep the hamster from moving. And treating the hamster and block as seperate objects the net force acting on the spring scale is F = ( m + M)g = (0.22 kg + 0.75 kg) (9.8 m/s2) = 9.506 N = 9.51 N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (b) When the friciton becomes zero then the net force on the scale is F = Mg-mgsin = (0.75 kg) (9.8 m/s2) - (0.22 kg)(9.8 m/s2)sin40 = 7.35 N- 1.385 N = 5.965 N = (0.75 kg) (9.8 m/s2) - (0.22 kg)(9.8 m/s2)sin40 = 7.35 N- 1.385 N = 5.965 NRelated Questions
