Evolutionary developmental biology or evo–devo is that part of biology concerned with how changes in embryonic development during single generations relate to the evolutionary changes that occur between generations. Charles Darwin claimed importance of development in understanding evolution.

Studies in evo–devo focus on mechanisms that link genes with structures i.e. phenotype. This is absolutely significant as genes do not make structures.

Molecular genetics has modernized evo–devo from last 20-25 years. The major role of evo-devo is to Integrate our expanding molecular understanding with mechanisms operating at the cell or other levels like tissues, organs, whole organism, organism–environment interactions.

Ecological evolutionary developmental biology (eco-evo-devo) integrates research from developmental biology and ecology to examine their relationship with evolutionary theory.
