Question

A mass of m is placed directly on the +y axis at a distance of D on a balance table. To balance the table a mass of 1/2m must be placed at a distance of __? A. 2D on the -x axis B. 1/2D on the -x axis C. 1/2D in the -y axis D. 2D in the -y axis A mass of m is placed directly on the +y axis at a distance of D on a balance table. Explanation / Answer

Now Torque is given by:

T = r*F

Using Torque balance:

Net torque = 0

Means

Clockwise torque = Counter-Clockwise torque

So,

m*g*D = (m/2)*g*r

r = 2D

So to balance the table mass m/2 should be placed at 2D in the -y axis

Correct option is D.
