9. +-12 points OSColPhys2016 28.4.P021 My Notes Ask Your Teacher Suppose a spaceship heading directly away from the Erth at 0.850c can shoot a canister at 0.580c relative to the ship. Assume the positive direction is toward the Earth. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.) (a) What is the velocity of the canister relative to the Earth, if it is shot directly at the Earth? (b) What is the velocity of the canister relative to the Earth, if it is shot directly away from the Earth? Additional Materials Reading

Explanation / Answer

(a) Speed of spaceship with respect to earth is (VS) = 0.85c
Speed of cannister with respect to the spaceship (UC) = 0.58c
Now velocityof cannister with respect to earth when shot directly at earth is given by
VC = [(VS - UC) / {1 +(VSUC /c2)}]
on putting values
VC = [(0.85c -0.58c) / {1 +(0.85c*0.58c /c2)}]
VC = 0.181c
(b) When cannister is shot away from earth
VC = [(VS + UC) / {1 +(VSUC /c2)}]
on putting values
VC = [(0.85c +0.58c) / {1 +(0.85c*0.58c /c2)}]
VC = 0.958c
