(a) Find the minimum compression of the spring needed to keep the block from falling, given that the coefficient of static friction between the block and the wall is 0.49.

(b) How does your answer to part (a) change if the mass of the block of wood is quadrupled?
-spring displacement decreases by a factor of 4
-spring displacement increases by a factor of 16
-spring displacement decreases by a factor of 16
-spring displacement increases by a factor of 4
Explain

Explanation / Answer

Given A spring with a force constant of 110 N/m is used to push a 0.27 kg block of wood against a wall

Normal force is due to the speing = 110x

a)Force due to friction =(Normal force ) = 0.49*110x = 53.9x

Weight of block = 0.27*9.81 = 2.65N

balancing forces on block we get

2.65 = 53.9x

x = 0.05m = 5cm

b) if the mass of the block of wood is quadrupled the deisplacement is also quadrapled

-spring displacement decreases by a factor of 4 - increases by a factor of 4
-spring displacement increases by a factor of 16 - decreases by a factor of 16
-spring displacement decreases by a factor of 16 - increases by a factor of 16
-spring displacement increases by a factor of 4 - decreases by a factor of 4
