Question

Circuit element shown in the above Figure is connected to an external circuit and the voltage at the top terminal and current in the top connector is measured over a period of time. For the first 4.94 hours the voltage is measured as 6.9 V and the current flowing into the element is as 6.8 mA. For the next 30 minutes the element is disconnected from the external circuit. In the next 2.23 hours, the voltage at the top terminal is 1.4 and the current flowing out of the circuit element is 4.3 mA. Assuming there was no energy stored in the element at the start, what is the energy stored (in Joules) in the element after the first interval? Answer: What is the energy stored (in Joules) in the element after the third interval? Answer:

Explanation / Answer

After the first interval of 4.94 hours, energy stored in the element is = V*I*T=6.9*6.8*10^-3*4.94*60*60=834.425J

For the next 30mins it is disconnected from the external circuit and so it is floating now and energy stored wil be retained after this 30mins.

Energy lost during third interval = V*I*T=1.4*4.3*10^-3*2.23*60*60=48.328J

Energy stored after the end of 3rd interval = 834.425-48.328=786.097J
