Question

When a solid cylindrical rod is connected across a fixed potential difference, a current I flows through the rod.

What would be the current (in terms of I) if the length were quadrupled?
Express your answer using two significant figures.

What would be the current (in terms of I) if the diameter were quadrupled?
Express your answer using two significant figures.

What would be the current (in terms of I) if both the length and the diameter were quadrupled?
Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

R = ?L/A ? is resistivity of the material in O-m L is length in meters A is cross-sectional area in m² A = pr², r is radius of wire in m if the length is quadrupled . The resistance will increase by 4 so the current will decrease by 4 if the diameter is quadrupl6ed the area will increase by a factor of 16 .This deceases the resistance by 16 . so the current will increase by 1 the current will increase by 16/4 =4 times
