Question
Concept Questions Two horizontal forces, and , are acting on a box, but only is shown in the drawing. can point either to the right or to the left. The box moves only along the x axis. There is no friction between the box and the surface.(a) What is the direction of and how does its magnitude compare to the magnitude of when the acceleration of the box is positive?(b) What is the direction of and how does its magnitude compare to the magnitude of when the acceleration of the box is negative?(c) What is the direction of and how does its magnitude compare to the magnitude of when the acceleration of the box is zero?Explanation / Answer
all forces act along x- axis only F1 is given force and F2 is the second applied force assuming F1 to be along positive x-axis (a)for positive acceleration there are 2 cases, one where the direction of F2 is same as F1 in positive x-axis with any magnitude and other where the direction of F2 is opposite to F1 but its magnitude is less than magnitude of F1. (b)For negative acceleration the direction of F2 is opposite to F1 and it's magnitude is greater than magnitude of F1. (c) For 0 acceleration, direction of F2 is opposite to F1 and it's magnitude is opposite to that of F1.
