Question
A bat strikes a 0.145- baseball. Just before impact, the ball is traveling horizontally to the right at 40.0, and it leaves the bat traveling to the left at an angle of 30 above horizontal with a speed of 65.0. The ball and bat are in contact for 1.65. Find the horizontal component of the average force on the ball. Take the x-direction to be positive to the right (should be -8500 J, But I can't figure out how!) Find the vertical component of the average force on the ball Any help is greatly appreciated!!Explanation / Answer
Initial horizontal momentum of the baseball (P1) = mu = 0.145 x (-40) = -5.8 N-s final horizontal momentum of the baseball (P2) = mv = 0.145 x (55cos40*) = 6.11 N-s =>?P(horizontal) = P2 - P1 = 6.11-(-5.8) = 11.91 N-s =>?P(vertical) = 0.145 x 55sin40* - 0 = 5.13 N-s =>BY F = ?P/?t =>F(horizontal) = ?P(horizontal)/?t = 11.91/1.85 = 6.44 N =>F(vertical) = ?P(vertical)/?t = 5.13/1.85 = 2.77 N
