Question
5. Oskar and Lakshmi are baking cookies for a bake sale. Both are using the same recipe; but Lakshmi has a larger oven, so she is making a larger batch of cookies than Oskar is. Oskar is using a cups of flour while Lakshmi is using b cups of flour. Answer the following questions, and use algebraic structure to justify your answers. (a) How many times as large as Oskar's batch of cookies is Lakshmi's batch? (b) If Oskar is using m cups of sugar, how many cups of sugar is Lakshmi using? (c) If Lakshmi is using k cups of butter, how many cups of butter is Oskar using? (d) IfOskar and Lakshmi sell all of the cookies they make at the same price and earn a total of R dollars then how much money did Oskar's cookies earn?Explanation / Answer
Ans. 5
a) Oscar's batch = a ....(1)
Lakshmi's batch = b ....(2)
Dividing (2) by (1)
Lakshmi's batch / Oscar's batch = b/a
=> Lakshmi's batch = (b/a) * Oscar's batch
b) Lakshmi's batch sugar = (b/a) * Oscar's batch sugar
=> Lakshmi's batch sugar = (b/a)*m
c) Lakshmi's batch butter = (b/a) * Oscar's bath butter
=> Oscar's batch butter = k*(a/b)
d) money earn ratio is also,
Lakshmi : Oscar = b:a ....(3)
Lakshmi + Oscar = R ....(4)
Putting Lakshmi from (3) in (4)
[(b/a) + 1]*Oscar = R
=> Oscar's earning = a*R/(a+b)
Ans. 6
n = length of inner triangle's base = 5*length of tile's side = 5*1
=> Length of tile's side = n/5
a) tiles required = sides + corners
=(2n + 2n + 2n) + (9n/5) = 39n/5
b) other method can be, directly count the number of small triangles
Since all are right angled isosceles, all are equal
So the answer is 39
Or 39n/5 as n = 5
