Question
Two children stand on opposite sides of a merry-go-round of diameter 6.0 m which is rotating at an angular velocity 12 revolutions per minute. One child throws a ball of mass m=0.50 kg at a speed v=6.0m/s directly toward the other child.
a) Calculate the magnitude of the Coriolis force acting on the moving ball due to the rotation of the merry-go-round,
b) Determine the distance by which the ball misses the second child, i.e., the lateral deflection of the ball after it has traveled across the merry-go-round.
Explanation / Answer
coriolis force=mass x coriolis acceleration.
Coriolis parameter here=2 x angular velocity x sin 90
coriolis acceleration=coriolis parameter x velocity of the object.By putting the values,we get the acceleration as= 15.07
Hence the coriolis force=15.07 x 0.5=7.54N
b)Its velocity in the lateral direction is say,l
After travelling the diameter,we have 6=6t,t=1
For lateral deviation, l=0.5 x 15.07 x 1 x1= 7.535m
