A. A "moving sidewalk" in an airport terminal building moves at a speed of 1.0

m/s and is of length 35.0m . A woman steps on at one end and walks at a speed 1.8m/srelative to the moving sidewalk.

B. How much time does she require to walk from one end to the other if she walks opposite to the direction the sidewalk is moving?

Explanation / Answer

When she moves along the sidewalk their speed gets added-

therefore the total speed becomes (1.8+1)= 2.8 m/s.

Now, total distance to cover= 35 m

Speed= 2.8m/s

tf Time taken= distance/speed= 35/2.8= 12.5s

b)When she moves opposite to the direction of sidewalk, speed becomes (1.8-1)= 0.8 m/s

Now, distance= 35

speed= 0.8 m/s

Time taken= 35/0.8= 43.75s
