Question

An object with mass 4.0kg is executing simple harmonic motion, attached to a spring with spring constant 300N/m . When the object is 0.015mfrom its equilibrium position, it is moving with a speed of 0.45

Part A:  Calculate the amplitude of the motion

I believe we need to use the equation   x = Acos(omega)t    and   v = -A(omega)Sin(omega)t     to solve this problem but I keep getting the answer wrong when I plug it into mastering physics.  I only have 1 try left and need to get it right!

Part B:  Calculate the max speed obtained by the object

Thanks so much guys!

m/s.

Explanation / Answer

Total energy of the system = 0.5*m*v^2 + 0.5*k*x^2 = 0.43875

When the mass is at its extreme all the energy is stored in the spring

k*A^2 =0.43875

A = 0.076

when the mass is in its equilibrium position it has maximum velocity

0.5*m*v^2 = 0.43875

v= 0.486
