Question

Conduct a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) on a parachute system for a spacecraft entry, descent and landing. Refer to parachute lecture notes on parachute system basics. Refer to the background document provided (FMEA_Explain_Project.ppt and MIL-STD I629A) to help understand the categories in the FMEA table to populate. These files also include the ranking scales needed for severity, occurrence, and detection. Generate 2 separate failures with the parachute system. Complete the FMEA table (using extra page space to be complete with your descriptions, as necessary) for each failure. For the particular ratings, such as severity, provide additional discussion on why you selected that rating. Note that you can ignore the entry called "class".

Explanation / Answer

1. parachute system used in the sky diving and for the safe landing of spacecraft or any other object to the earth surface. spacecraft having a very useful information , if it will be impact on the earth surface directly than all information will be destroyed. we used parachute for the air sports like sky diving. so parachute system is very useful for us.

But there is another aspect of this parachute system, it can be failed, there is a several mode for its failure, some are following-

a) external or internal electrical failure, microcontroler rograming failure and power failure in release mechanism

b)  electrical failure, microcontroler rograming failure, fuse failure, pilot chute is not deployed, pilot chute deploy main parachute, power failure in parachute deployement.

c) baloon burst

d) sensor fail, radios fail, memory fails in data collection.

e) GPS failure, radios failure, reciever failure, in tracking

becouse of these failure mode effect will be-

a) Unreliable data

b) structure will be crushed

c) put people at risk

d) no stored data

e) loose redndant tracking

f) cannot find probe

2. Basics of the parachute systems are-

a) released mechanism should be flexible

b) baloon must be made by higher good quality of material

c) data collection equipment should be accurate and in a good condition

d) gps and receievers should be accurate.
