Question

Take some time to research climate change. Climate change. Are you for it or against it? Identify scientific evidence that supports or refutes climate change. Discuss whether you support or do not support climate change as a human-caused event. Identify possible causes of climate change that are human related. Identify possible cause(s) of climate change that is/are not related to human activity. Identify the potential results of climate change. Suggest possible ways that humans could reduce the threat of climate change. (You must include this even if you do not agree that climate change is human driven.) Write a persuasive article that you could post on a blog site or submit for an editorial section of a paper or website. You will want to include information on the three factors listed above. Use what you have learned to convince the audience that climate change is real and must be taken seriously. Please make copy paste available

Explanation / Answer

Scientific events that support climate change:

1. GLOBAL TEMPERATURE RISE

The Earth's average surface temperature has risen about 1.1-degree Celcius since in the late 19th century. This has been driven by increased carbon dioxide and other human activities.

2.SHRINKING ICE SHEETS

The Greenland and Antartic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data shows that Antartica lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometers of ice per year between 2002 and 2006.

3.WARMING OCEANS

The top 700 meters of ocean showing warming of .302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.

4. GLACIAL RETREAT

Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Alaska etc.

5. EXTREME EVENTS

The number of record high-temperature events has been increasing while the number of record low-temperature events has been decreasing since 1950.

I support that climate change is due to human activities because according to NASA almost 97 percent of the climate scientists believe that these changes have been attributed due to human activities. The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million in last 150 years.

Possible causes of climate change that are not related to human activity

Few scientists believe that Earth's climate has always warmed and cooled, and the 20th-century rise in global temperature is within the bounds of natural temperature fluctuations over the past 3,000 years. Also, the carbon dioxide produced by the Human is re-absorbed by oceans, forests, etc. neutralizing any climate changes and CO2 is already saturated in earth’s atmosphere, and more CO2, manmade or natural, will have little impact on climate.Global warming and cooling are primarily caused by fluctuations in the sun's heat, not by human activity.

Deep ocean currents are a primary driver of natural climate warming and cooling cycles. Changes in ocean currents are primarily responsible for the melting Greenland ice sheet, Arctic sea ice, and Arctic permafrost. Over the 20th century, there have been two Arctic warming periods with a cooling period (1940-1970) in between.

POTENTIAL RESULTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Sea levels have been rising and will continue to rise. Longer, more intense drought will threaten crops, wildlife, and freshwater supplies From polar bears in the Arctic to marine turtles off the coast of Africa, our planet’s diversity of life is at risk from the changing climate. Air pollution (a silent killer) is going to become worse with climate change.

Human activities that can reduce effects of climate change:

1. Purchase a fuel-efficient car or most preferably an electric car to replace your most frequently used automobile.

2. Use public transport or walk or use a bicycle that will boost your health and reduce the carbon emission.

3. Install a solar heated system to heat water.

4. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.

5. Replace your current home appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher) with high-efficiency models.

6. Buy organic and locally grown foods. Processed items should be avoided. Eating low on the food chain will help since 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from meat and dairy product
