Question
Take a tour and examine the public facilities of your campus (or if you do not go to campus, examine a public space you normally go) which may include:
bathroom sinks and stalls, drinking fountains, bleachers, cafeteria counters and racks, bookstore aisles, curbs, ramps, and railings, chairs and tables, computer workstations, elevators, stairs, and escalators, vending machines, doors and doorways, fire alarms and extinguishers, or anything else you find relevant.
Then answer the following questions:
1. Where did you observe? Include in your answer the date, time, place, description, and other general details for your observation.
2. What assumptions about the size, ability, and shape of the users (height, weight, proportionate length of arms and legs, width of hips and shoulders, hand preference, mobility, vision, etc.) are incorporated into the designs?
3. What barriers to access or usage exist for people with physical disabilities? (describe at least one)
4. How might these barriers be a result of the assumptions you identified in question 2?
5. For the barrier you identified, describe a way it could be removed. If removing the barrier would cost money, suggest one or two ways that your solution could be funded.
Explanation / Answer
Answers as below for
1. Observed mainly in Shopping Malls, Cinema Theateres, Airports in major places in india specially for men
2. The Assumptions incorporated in these designs were mainly for average size people with height 5 inches, normal vision 6/6, waist 38 , 40 etc and hip 48, 50 etc.
3. The Barriers to access or usage exist for people with Physical disabilities like not having legs and moving on wheel chair etc were that only few provisions for them were made like out of 100 toilets only 1 is dedicated for physical disabled person. so they are very few
4. in question 2 they were designed only for normal people and less priority is given to physically disabled persons.
5. the solution is increase the Percentage of priority given to physicall disab;le people, by designing a unique design of toilets which can be used both by normal men and desable men at the same time.
the unique design should be suitable for every one of every size. etc, so more research need to be done to speciially design them
