Nuclear fusion is the source of all the energy that the Sun releases into space and this process begins right in the core of the Sun. The energy generated by fusion makes its way from the core towards the radiation zone as photons. These photons bounce around til they reach the top of the radiation zone and then the plasma absorbs these photons as the temperature cools down. Finally it finds its way up through the convection zone till the hotter gases drift up and the energy escapes into the surface of the Sun or the photosphere.
This entire process takes upto hundreds and thousands of years.
