Question
Please answer
A rear window on a car has ail area of 0.6 m2 and consists of a 0.5 cm thick sheet of safety glass (k = 1.3 W'/m.K). A thin transparent heater is attached to the inside surface of the glass as a means of removing frost formation on the outside surface. The inside ambient temperature of the car is 20degree C, and the inside heat transfer coefficient is 15 W/m2.K. If the outside ambient temperature and heat transfer coefficient are -10degree C and 100 W/m2.K. calculate the minimum required power to the heater required to melt the frost on the outside surface of the window. Note that, to melt the frost, the outside surface temperature will have to be at or above the melting temperature of the frost.Explanation / Answer
Melting temperature of ice = 0
first let solve for the temperature on the inside of the window.
We know that there is conduction through the window and there is convection outside the window and they are both directly connected in series therefore:
(T-0)(K*A)=(0-(-10))*h*A <---- simplifying by A we have T*K=10*h <---------- h of outside
T= 769.23 C
now solve the two way heat conduction problem as follow:
q= (T-20)(15*A)+(T-0)(k*A) <------ A=0.6
q=???
