Question

Thermography, ultrasonic, vibration or lubricant monitoring?

You work at a power plant with several gas turbines, a significant number of electric motors, hydraulic pumps, and various belts and gearboxes for power transmission. You are in the process of setting up condition monitoring for the facility, and must determine two parameters to monitor: infrared thermography, ultrasonics, vibration, or lubricant condition, (Funding is not sufficient to implement all four). Select your top two parameter choices. Explain why you chose your two parameters and why you did NOT choose the other two parameters.

Explanation / Answer

we should use the vibration and lubricant condition

vibration gives the alignment or any physical defect in the rotot motor etc

lubricant condition (basically temperature of lubricant and its evaporation rate) will notify us the viscous damping and heat generation which affects the machine..

.............

ultrssonic techniques determines the physical defects which can be identified by the vibration

and infrared thermography measures temperature which can be measured by properties of lubricant

hence vibration and lubricants should be the measure for monitor in order to reduce the cost and also efficient
