Question

Two 20-nun steel plates are butt-welded together. Both the plate and the welding electrode materials correspond to strength properties of Su=500 MPa and Sy=400 MPa. The imposed loading fluctuates rapidly between -20 and + 60 kN. Estimate the length of weld required in order to provide a safety factor of 2.5. If the excess weld materials is carefully ground off to provide smooth, continuous surfaces. If the weld reinforcement is not removed. (No submission required for (b), and solution will be posted).

Explanation / Answer

weld strength = [s x fu] / [2.5*sqrt(3)] ; where s is the weld thickness

= 0.020 x 500 x 106 / (2.5 * 1.732) = 2309.4 KN/m

length required = 60/2309.4 = 0.026 m = 26 mm
