If we encounter an equation, that has a fraction in it, we should multiply both the sides of the equation by the denominator of the fraction to simplify the equation. The denominators are x and 4. Their LCD is 4x. 3/x +5= ¼ or, (3+5x)/x = ¼ or, (3+5x)*4x/x = 4x/4 or, 4(3+5x) = x or, 12+20x = x or, 20x-x = -12 or, 19x = -12 so that x = -12/19. 5/(x2-4)= 7/(x-2). Here, x2-4 = (x+2)(x-2). Thus, we factorize x2-4 before computing the LCD. The LCD is (x+2)(x-2) = x2-4. We have 5/(x2-4)= 7/(x-2) or, [5 (x2 -4)/(x2-4)= [7(x2 -4)/(x-2)] or, 5 = [7(x+2)(x-2)]/(x-2) or, 5 = 7(x+2) or, 5 = 7x+14 or, 7x = -14+5 = -9. Therefore, x = -9/7. The LCD of (x+1)2 and (x+1)(x-1) is (x+1)2(x-1). as (x+1)(x-1) is not divisible by(x+1)2 .
