Question
a purchasing office is to assign a contract for copier paper and another contract for DVD+RWs to any one of the three firms bidding for these contracts (any one firm could receice both contracts.) find the probabilities of the following events.
a. Firm I receives both contracts
b. firm I receives a contract, given that both contracts do not to go the same firm.
c. firm I receives the contract for paper, given that it does not receive the contract for the DVD+RWs
d. what assumptions have you made?
Please explain in great detail and do not copy someone elses answer
Explanation / Answer
Given there are three firms, so the probability that one firm will get a contract is 1/3, so, probability of not getting a contract is 2/3.
(a) Probability that firm I receives both contracts = (1/3)*(1/3) = 1/9.
(b) Probability that firm I will get either one contract is = [(1/3)*(2/3)] + [(2/3)*(1/3)] = (2/9)+(2/9) = 4/9.
(c) Probability that firm I will get contract for paper and not DVD = (1/3)*(2/3) = 2/9.
(d) We have made an assumption that, all the firms have equal probability to get a contract and assigning of paper and DVD to the firms are independent events.
