Question

a. Based on the t-statistic and corresponding p-value, we fail to reject the null. True/False?

b. IPHY 2800 students spend a signficantly different number of hours surfing the web per week than average Americans. True/False?

According to a Harris Interactive poll, Americans spend an average of 13 hours per week surfing the web. In the Spring of 2012 we surveyed our IPHY 2800 Intro to Statistics class and asked "How many hours per week do you spend surfing the Web?" and we asked students to report their gender and height. The data are available in a csv file that you can download from the link in Step 1 below In this scenario, we will use a t-test to challenge the hypothesis that IPHY 2800 students spend a different length of time surfing the web than the American population in general (13 hours), at the 95% confidence level.

Explanation / Answer

a) false

We reject the null hypothesis as the p-value is way less than 0.05 or 0.01 or any other suitable level of significance.

Note : we reject null hypothesis if the p-value is less than the level of significance and don't reject it when it is greater.

b) true

Here we reject the null hypothesis, that is they spend the same time in favour of the alternative they spend significantly different time. We have already seen in part a that using p value we have already rejected the null hypothesis.
