Question
8.6. Discuss whether the following types of systematic sam- pling result in higher precision than simple random sam- pling. (a) Every fifth sentence to estimate the total number of words on a page. (b) Every tenth student entering the bookstore of a university from 12 to 2 P.M. on a Monday to estimate the average amount spent by all the students of that university for books. (c) Every fourth house on each street of a region consisting of one, two, three, or more member families to estimate the total number of children attending schools in the region. (d) Every tenth person leaving a polling booth between 6 and 9 P.M. to predict the winning candidate in a political election.Explanation / Answer
(a)Random sampling is better than systematic sampling in this case as the sample size is small (only 1 page) , random sampling provides the best results.
(b)
Systematic sampling is better than random sampling in this case. The population size could be large i.e. th enumber of students entering the bookstore from 12 to 2. Also since the population is random, there is no set pattern in data which results in systematic sampling being a better approach.
(c)
Sytematic sampling will be preferred over random sampling , as the population size is significant (whole region) and set patterns might not exist.
(d)
Systematic sampling could be preferred if the population size is large
