Question

Epidemilogy: I am confused on how to interpret the graph. I understand that incidence is the possibility or risk of contracting the disease where prevalence indivates how widespread the disease is, but I do not understand to how read the graph (I am taking a online class so all I have to go on is my book and it is not helping me).

The graph below shows the trends in incidence and prevalence for chronic disease Q over a 50 year period. Clearly, the prevalence is decreasing while the incidence is increasing.

Which of the following interpretations is consistent with the graph? There may be more than one answer. Explain why you choose or eliminated each answer.

NOTE: Prevalence (P) = Incidence (I) x duration of disease (D)

a. The disease may be becoming more chronic (longer duration)

b. The case fatality rate may be declining

c. The disease may be becoming more rapidly fatal

d. The disease may be becoming shorter in duration due to better medical treatment

Incidence and Prevalence of Disease Q Incident Prevalence 200 180 100 140 120 100 80 80 L40 20 130 1940 1950 1960 1970 1980

Explanation / Answer

Prevalence (P) = Incidence (I) x duration of disease (D)

as we can see from the graph that prevalenece graph is continously falling and incidence graph is increasing continously.

so Duration of disease (D) = P/I

so as denominator is increasing and numerator is falling that measn disease duration is decreasing due to better medical treatment across the years. So, OPtion D is correct here related to the given graph.
