Question
Astronauts and space enthusiasts have tried for a long time to figure out ways in which gravity could be somehow simulated during a long-term space mission.1) Why might that be a useful thing to do?
2) One method that's been considered for years is to have your spacecraft, space station, etc. be equipped to rotate around some central axis. Explain in as much detail as you can how rotating your spacecraft can help give occupants the sensation of weight. Explanation / Answer
Astronauts are exposed to zero gravity environment on space missions and depending on the length of the exposure is related to the severity of the health problems. Some of the health problems include bone density loss, muscle atrophy, impaired eye sight etc. The astronauts also suffer health problems once they enter back in the gravity field of Earth.
Artificial gravity by rotation behaves very similarly to normal gravity. The artificial gravity is a case of the rotating space station is due to the centripetal force acting due to the rotation. Unlike gravitational force on earth, which pulls the objects towards the center of the planet, the centripetal force towards the axis of the rotation. This centripetal force is dependent on the rotating speed of the spacecraft and the distance of the object from the axis of rotation and can be adjusted to create an Earth-like gravity on the space station to prevent long term exposure health problems caused by zero g environment.
