Question
Candidate 1 and 2 are running for president. Suppose 53% of people in a first poll voted for candidate 1 and 47% of people voted for candidate 2. The difference between the proportion of people voted for candidate 1 and proportion of people voted for candidate 2 is called 'discrepancy.' The estimated discrepancy is .53-.47=.06.
In a separate independent poll from same population of same sample size, 47% of people voted for candidate 2 and 53% voted for candidate 1. What is the standard error of the discrepancy as estimated from these two independent polls?
Explanation / Answer
The margin of error for the difference for the 2 polls is given as
MOE(p1-p2) = 1.96*sqrt(p1q1/n1 + p2q2/n2)
now p1 = 0.53 , q1 = 0.47
p2 = 0.47 , q2 = 0.53
n1=n2 = say 100
1.96*sqrt((0.53*0.47/100)^2) = 0.0048
hence the error is 0.0048
