Question

The potential for long-term effects from concussions suffered by NFL football players is currently a great concern. Medical professionals and scientists want to develop a better helmet to protect the players from injuries, but it is not clear what type of helmet is best. To gain insight into this problem, researchers have found the results of a previous experiment for lacrosse helmets. Four brands of lacrosse helmets were used in the experiment. Ten helmets of each brand were subjected to a sudden impact, and amount of impact on the interior of the helmet was measured. Lower values indicate less interior impact, and thus is considered better for protecting against concussions. (c) Can we use the ANOVA F test to compare the means? If your answer is no, explain why not and go to the next dataset. If your answer is yes, explain why and continue answering these questions. (d) Does the data provide evidence that any of the treatments have a different mean? To support your decision, provide the appropriate graph and/or the p-value(s) of the appropriate test(s).

Explanation / Answer

The ANOVA F test can be used to compare the means.

To use the F-test to determine whether group means are equal, it’s just a matter of including the correct variances in the ratio. In one-way ANOVA, the F-statistic is this ratio:

F = variation between sample means / variation within the samples

since the data set is not given, further analysis can not be done.
