Genealogy research. Writing in the Journal of Family History (Jan. 2010), Hong Kong University historian Sangkuk Lee investigated the genealogy of a certain Korean clan. Of interest to Lee was whether or not a family name continued into the next generation in the clan genealogy (called a continued line) or dropped out (called a dropout line). Lee used side-by-side pie charts to describe the rate at which certain occupational titles of clan individuals occurred within each line type. Similarly, constructed MINITAB bar charts are shown above.
a. Identify the two qualitative variables graphed in the side-by-side pie charts.
b. Give a full interpretation of the charts. Identify the major differences (if any) between the two-line groups.
Explanation / Answer
a) first qualitative variable – occupational titles of clan individuals in the continued line
2nd qualitative variable - occupational title of clan individuals in the dropout time
b) In the continued line ,about 63 % ,either the high grade or the middle grade.
Only about 20 % were in the non-official category. In the dropout line , only 22 % were in
Either the high grade or middle grade while about 64 % were in non-official category .
The percent’s in the low grade and provincial categories were about the same for the two lines.
In continued line , about 5 % of low grade ,5 % of other grade category and also 5 % of provincial
Grade category and also 5 % of provincial grade category . There are same % distributed in other category and also provincial category in dropout line.
