Question
What is an appropriate statistic to describe spread of the variable SEATS?
a. IQR b. Skewness c. Mean d. SE Mean e. Median
Minitab data: Descriptive Statistics:
Variable N N* Mean StDev Median IQR Skewness
Seats 268 11 71.54 62.15 62.00 69.75 2.25
My interpretation: Two hundred seventy nine restaurants were randomly surveyed in WI in 1979. Of those 268 provided information on seat numbers in dining area. The mean value of seats in dining area was 71.5, with a standard deviation of 62.2. The distribution of seats is slightly positively skewed. There were many outliers in the dataset either at or above 205 seats.
Explanation / Answer
Given that the distribution is positively skewed and there are outliers in the dataset. For such a situation, when the distribution is right/postive skewed, we use Median as the center of the distribution and IQR is the best measure of spread of the distribution.
Hence, appropriate statistic to describe spread of the variable SEATS is IQR
Answer is Option-A
