Formative assessment can be defined as the assessment which is used to monitor student's learning and help provide feedback for both the teacher and student to improve their teaching and learning respectively.
Summative assessment can be defined as the assessment used to evaluate student learning at the end of lecture/instructional unit and is set against some standard or benchmark.
Thus Formative assessment evaluation includes zero or low stakes /points and is only used to monitor overall student learning and the areas that the student has to work on.
Summative assessment evaluation on the other hand includes learning at the end of an instructional unit. It can include a midterm exam, project etc.
An example of this would be if a teacher teaches fractions to students in a class, Formative assessment would include asking some students to come and draw the concept of half, one, three fourth on the board or in their own books. This can be done daily during lectures on fractions. Thus this would helps the student perform better on the summative assessment such as midterm exam and score on questions for fractions better.
