Utilitarianism is a theory about how things should be evaluated which humans face that involves choices. Moral codes, actions, laws and character traits are the things that can be evaluated. This theory is a form of consequentialism as it believes that results of things ( actions, laws etc) decide whether it is right or wrong, good or bad. Utilitarians say that an individual at any given situation should choose the option that "maximizes utility" I.e produce largest amount of good.
According to Jeremy Bentham, good which utilitarians try to maximize is pleasure or happiness. This view is called hedonism. Things which cause pleasure such as foods, freinds etc are instrumental goods whereas the resulting pleasure and happiness are intrinsic goods.
