RE: Sect. 1 Week 14 DQ 12: Justice and access to health care

COLLAPSE

Does society have a responsibility to provide access to health care to those who lack it?

Inefficiencies wrought by waste and abusive greed are common pitfalls to any system containing a human component. Simply put, I don’t believe there is a solve all solution that any one theory can possess. Each option has those who win and those who loose.

Nothing is free, it always costs someone somewhere. Unless we as mankind can become selfless in all respects, there will remain those who feel unfairly treated as their sacrifices are enjoyed by those who labor not but had the ability to do so.

I think it is necessary to define access… we are told (Daniels p.736) that emergency services cannot be denied by law. I agree with this law and believe that one should be treated in such cases, yet resolution of provided services must follow. Unfortunately, it is possible for the recipient of such services to be left with the burden of a seemingly disproportional bill to services provided. Hence the lure of insurance.

Insurance by nature is finite in many regards. As such, it’s limited in goods or services it can provide within a sustainable model. Consequently, it is therefore not possible to mandate access to services which cannot be purchased to begin with.

Explanation / Answer

Every system has some flaws in it. Somewhere justice is denied to someone, and they pay the cost while others enjoy. Similarly, insurance denies access to better medical facilities to many because of its limitations in providing services that needs to be paid for or purchased. Thus, insurance too denies the mandate of access to emergency medical facilities by the law and fails to provide an effective solution.
