Reflective Journal Week 4 Day 1: In what situations is there a strong motivation to self-present (job interview, dating, etc.) and in what situations is there less motivation to self present (with your family, in a crowd)? What self presentation strategies are most effective? Day 2: The theory of self verification explain how we construct our social reality. Does this explain why people stay in an abusive relationship? Please explain. Day 3: Discuss how negative stereotypes may hinder or prevent performance. Day 4. How do stereotypes impact self-esteem or how one feels about themselves?Explanation / Answer
1) Self presentation refers to how people try to present themselves in order to control how others view them. Situations in which there is a strong motivation to self present is when people make an internal and public commitment to oneself of their self image. This commitment comes when one receives a positive or other rewards for presenting their self image. In other situations, they are less motivated to self present.
Self presentation has a variety of strategies right from verbal to non verbal. Non verbal strategies include physical appearance, body language and other behaviour.
2) Self verification is a theory of social psychology that states that people want to be known and understood by others in accordance to their firmly held beliefs and feelings about themselves. Yes, this could be an explanation as to why people tend to continue an abusive relationship. This is because self verification is related to self concepts and self esteem which shapes the guiding actions of a person. It makes lives stable and comprehensible and it is through self verification that a person would stay motivated to continue a certain way of life.
3) Negative stereotypes make people feel at risk to be conforming to stereotypes about their social group. It makes a person anxious which thereby hinders their performance. It is a primary cause in performance gap. For example, researchers believe that it is because of this negative stereotyping that certain racial and gender groups perform low in academics.
4) Stereotypes have the power to change a person's self esteem either positively or negatively. For example, Asians are stereotyped to be tech-savvy, and this stereotype might work in favour of all Asians. This is because along with stereotypes, comes the way the person is treated by the society. Similarly, an English restaurant owned by an Asian may not help in boosting the self esteem of the restaurant owner, as people might not be much interested in trying out the English food prepared by an Asian.
