The Reflective Paper should demonstrate understanding of the reading assignments as well as the implications of new knowledge. The eight-page paper should integrate readings and class discussions into work and life experience. It may include explanation and examples from previous experience as well as implications for future application.

The purpose of the Reflective Paper is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by describing your understanding and application of knowledge in the field of human resource management.

Focus of the Reflective Paper

The primary function of human resource management is to increase the effectiveness and contribution of employees in the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. Consider all the areas of HRM that have been discussed in class:

EEO and Affirmative Action,
Human resources planning, recruitment, and selection,
Human resources development,
Compensation and benefits,
Safety and Health, and
Employee and labor relations.
Submit a Reflective Paper in which you explain how these aspects work together to perform that primary function. Are any aspects more important than the others? Why or why not? How do you believe the HRM role can be optimized for shaping organizational and employee behavior?

The Reflective Paper must: (a) identify the main issues in the chosen area, (b) demonstrate new learning that has occurred, (c) include class activities or incidents that facilitated learning and understanding, (d) identify specific current and/or future applications and relevance to your workplace, and (e) reflect the potential impact to your future career plans or even in your personal life at home. The emphasis of the Reflective Paper should be on parts 'd' and 'e,' and on the application of new learning. Explore, in depth, the benefits of the new learning and understanding that has taken place.

Writing the Reflective Paper

The Reflective Paper:

Must be eight double-spaced pages in length and formatted according to APA style as outlined in your approved style guide.
Must include a cover page that includes:
Name of paper

Course number and name
Instructor's name

Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.

As our world grows, expands and becomes increasingly more interconnected by various technological advances, the need for effective interpersonal communication among differing culture has become quite clear. Interaction with others is called interpersonal communication, and it occurs whenever one person interacts with another[GGM3] , it is a form of communication that involves a number of people who can interact exclusively with one another usually in an informal setting. You cannot survive in society without interpersonal communication skills. They enable you to function socially and to maintain relationships that are important to you[GGM4] . Although interpersonal communication is usually thought of as being performed in small centralized groups, a need to broaden these groups and bring about a general feeling of cultural awareness has become apparent to certain degree; all communication could be called interpersonal, as it occurs between two or more people. However, it is useful and practical to restrict the definition to distinguish those relationships that involve a relatively small group of people, such as couples, families, friends, workgroups, and even classroom groups from those involving much larger numbers of people, as would occur in public rallies or among massive television audience. Unlike other forms of communication, interpersonal communication involves person-to- person interactions. Additionally, the perception that a social bond has developed between the interact ant, however tenuous and temporary it may seem, is also much more likely. Intercultural communication is a symbolic, interpretive, transactional, contextual, processing tool with which people from different cultures create shared meanings. When we speak to someone with whom we share little or no cultural bond, it is referred to as intercultural communication. Our need to communicate across culture can be very beneficial personally and professionally. Within an intercultural setting, nonverbal and verbal communications are both prevalent in emphasizing the differences in cultures. The way we act and the things we say determines whether or not we belong in a certain culture. Nonverbal communication systems provide information about the meaning associated with the use of space, time, touch and gestures. They help to define the boundaries between the members and nonmembers of a culture. In order to fully enjoy and benefit from interpersonal communication in an intercultural setting one must first gain a full, comprehensive knowledge of the determining factors of culture. There are several ways of defining culture. Webster's defines culture as ..." a particular civilization at a particular stage" or... "All the knowledge and values shared by a society[GGM5] ." A second approach emphasized the social heredity of a group of people, suggesting that the new members of a culture must be taught its fundamental ideas, practices and experiences. The social heredity approach therefore asserts that culture is symbolically transmitted, often "handed down" through generations, from parents or other adults to children, who in turn grow up and teach their own children the culture's customs and expectations. This approach is important because it emphasizes that one does not become a member of a culture by birth, but rather through a process of learning. The word culture is often considered in terms of nationality or one's country of origin. Other more specific distinguishing characteristics of culture are region, gender, sexual orientation and preference, age, marital and parental status. Another approach to understanding the concept of culture involves the beliefs, valves and norms that exist to guide an individual's behavior in solving common problems. This approach, often called the perception of subjective cultural approach, suggests that people behave as they do because of the perceptions they have about the world and their expectations about how they should behave in that world. The perception of rules and groups norms, roles and valves are aspects of subjective culture. This approach emphasizes that culture is a shared set ideas and practices that exist in perceptions then governs people's behaviors. The consequences of one's subjective culture, then; can be seen in the repetitive patterns and regularities of people's behavior. It is proven fact that interpersonal communication, whether it occurs intercultural or among people that share a common cultures effective at combating loneliness, shaping self-concepts, confirming experiences, renewing persona and aiding us in understanding who we are and how we relate to others. Another aspect of the benefits of effective interpersonal growth[GGM6] . Intrapersonal communication refers to our internal communication with ourselves opposed to others. The healthiness of our intrapersonal communication can directly affect our levels of self-esteem, general inner growth as a human being and the way in which we view ourselves in relation to others. Edward T. Hall, a prominent scholar in the field of communication, developed and presented two major ways in which one's culture is conveyed[GGM7] [GGM8] . I would very much agree with your instructor on the extreme importance of citing your sources correctly. I would also read your paper aloud and ask yourself as you do so whether there are statements that do not quite sound right. Although academic writing emphasizes precision and efficiency, the voice of the paper should still sound conversational. Shorten the sentences. Reduce the amount of jargon. Reduce the use of passive voice. Reduce the academic-ese in sentences like this one: "Although interpersonal communication is usually thought of as being performed in small centralized groups, a need to broaden these groups and bring about a general feeling of cultural awareness has become apparent to certain degree" There is a much more direct way to say this. "Recently specialists who study interpersonal communication have needed to broaden their viewpoints to include other forms of exchange than what takes place in small, centralized groups." I've included an active noun in that sentence. And we avoid the excess verbiage and vagueness of "has become apparent to a certain degree" I would also not use a Webster's dictionary definition in a college level essay.
