Question
What would be the time delay results of the patellar reflex when the subject is relaxed, tensed, and the Jendrassiks's Maneuver. Which will give the longest time delay? lowest time delay? What is the PHYSIOLOGICAL reason behind this?
How about the time delay results of the Archilles Reflex when light, medium, and vigorious taps were performed with the reflex hammer on the subject? Which will give the longest time delay? SHortest time delay? and explain in PHYSIOLOGICAL concepts the reaon behind this?
Explanation / Answer
thus causing 1. to begin with, any stressful condition such as tensing muscles or performing Jendrassils maneuver decreases time delay.
2. This is due to fact that JENDRASIKS MANEUVER and TENSING MUSCLE increase GAMMA MOTOR DISCHARGE from the RETICULOSPINAL NUCLEUS in the medulla as a result of which ALPHA MOTOR neurons become MORE SENSITIVE to a stimulus leading to quick reflex contraction of a muscle causing decreased time delay. Similarily a light tap causes increased time delay.
3. JENDRASIKS MANEUVER causes the greatest amount of discharge from the GAMMA MOTOR NEURONS s o the time delay is GREATEST in relaxing position and LOWEST during JENDRASIKS MANEUVER.
4. In case of ACHILLES TENDON REFLEX which is also a type of DEEP TENDON REFLEX vigorous tapping causes decraesed time delay because more SPINDLES get stretched which carry the sensory information to spinal cord through 1b sensory fibres as a result of which more alpha motor units are recruited
