Question

What would be the time delay results of the patellar reflex when the subject is relaxed, tensed, and the Jendrassiks's Maneuver. Which will give the longest time delay? lowest time delay? What is the PHYSIOLOGICAL reason behind this?

How about the time delay results of the Archilles Reflex when light, medium, and vigorious taps were performed with the reflex hammer on the subject? Which will give the longest time delay? SHortest time delay? and explain in PHYSIOLOGICAL concepts the reaon behind this?

Explanation / Answer

ANS) Patellar Reflex: means knee reflex or knee jerk actions that is kicking movement of the lower leg in reaction to a sharp tap at the patellar tendon, which lies just below the kneecap.

During patellar reflex when subject is relaxed the time delay will be: approximately 0.02 seconds, the sensory nerve impulse travels alongside a sensory neuron to the spinal cord. Here an affiliation neuron transfers the impulse to a motor neuron. The motor neuron incorporates the impulse to a muscle, which contracts and moves a body element in relaxed state

During patellar reflex when subject is tensed the time delay will be: 1-2 milliseconds, it responses to a stretch stimulus within the muscle when tensed or stretched without delay despatched to the spinal wire and a response to the muscle. Hence, the nerve impulses travels only to the spinal cord and back and not have to travel to the brain, it is the most quickest nerval impulse encompassing a protective degree for the muscle tissues preventing it from tearing.

During patellar reflex time delay during Jendrassik's maneuver: is the longest. The tendon underneath the affected person's knee is then hit with a reflex hammer to stimulate the patellar reflex. The elicited response is as compared with the reflex end result of the same action whilst the maneuver is not in use. Regularly a bigger reflex reaction will be found when the patient is interested by the maneuver, as the maneuver may also prevent the affected person from consciously inhibiting or influencing his or her response to the hammer

ANS) Archilles Reflex: takes place whilst the achilles tendon is tapped even as the foot is dorsiflexed. A advantageous result will be the jerking of the foot closer to its plantar floor. Being a deep tendon reflex, it is monosynaptic.

During archilles reflex when subject is light tapped with reflex hammer the time delay will be: 1.9 – 2.4 s Although the reflex response is proportional to the amplitude of the stimulus , the stimulus for the light tapped will be as light as possible in response.

During archilles reflex when subject is meduim tapped with reflex hammer the time delay will be:most sufficient responses to the tendon and produced most effective reflex responses when medium tapping occurs.

During archilles reflex when subject is vigoriously tapped with reflex hammer the time delay will be: highest when subject is vigoriously tapped with reflex hammer larger muscle groups jerkmore forcefully than smaller muscle groups in response to the stimuli.
