Question

Please answer ALL questions H-N! Do not answer if you will not complete ALL parts of the question!!

You are running late for physiology class, and instead of cutting through a yard where there is a dangerous cat, you go the long way and run all the way to school. It is very hot and you sweat excessively and become dehydrated. You lose proportionately more water than salts.

H) What non-‘roid hormone is produced as the end result of activation of the pathway in g.?

I) Name 3 hormones that will be affecting the state of contraction of your arterioles and peripheral vasculature.

J) Will your levels of aldosterone increase or decrease in response to dehydration? Explain.

K) What is the direct stimulus for increased release of aldosterone when MAP is low?

L) How specifically does aldosterone cause increased absorption of water?

M) You drink 2 L of water to replace the fluids that you lost, and restore normal mean arterial pressure. What happens to the osmolarity of your blood?

N) You start to experience muscle weakness due to low plasma potassium levels. What condition are you suffering from?

Explanation / Answer

H. the angiotensin is a non steroidal hormone which is produced as an end result of activation of the pathway

i. the 3 hormones that affects the state of contraction of arterioles and peripheral vasculature are epinephrine, norepinephrine and corticosteriods.

j. when dehydration occurs the level,of alsodterone is elevated which stimulates the sodium and water retention thereby conserves the water and maintains the fluid balance.

k. Ifthere is decreased BP, the adrenal glands are stimulated by the stretch receptors to release the aldosterone, which thereby increases sodium reabsorption from urine, sweat, and gut. which causes an increased osmolarity to extracellular fluid, which will thereby return the blood pressure towards normal.

l. Aldosterone cause an increase in the salt and the water reabsorption into blood stream from kidney and thereby increase blood volume, and restore the salt levels and the blood pressure.

m. the osmolarity of blood is reduced because a large amount of electrolytes are lost during sweating and due to excess intake of water hemodilution occurs so the osmolarity of blood is reduced

n. in this condition the person is suffering from hypokalemia which results in fatigue, muscular weakness and respiratory distress
