You are the collegiate Strength & Conditioning Specialist who is administering pre-testing for an athletic team. Please choose a sport, describe the energy system demands, select appropriate sport tests, and describe your selections for that sport.
Fencing
Fencing is a moderately physically sport demanding composed of three, three-minute bouts with a one-minute rest interval in between that relies heavily on skill and technique. Both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems are recruited during a match, but typically have less to do with performance than skill and technique (Khokhla & Pavlos, 2017). The energy system demands due to the interval-type sessions are the ATP-CP (90%) and Glycolysis (10%) systems (Fox, 1993).
Aside from the skill and techniques, improving heart rate recovery in between bouts, upper and lower body muscle strength, balance and power are important components for a fencing training program.
Testing
The vital components of fencing are: cardiovascular fitness, speed, muscular strength and power, flexibility and balance. One thing to note is that it is also an asymmetrical sport.
Cardiovascular testing - Yo-yo intermittent recovery test
This test was chosen because, like fencing, it mimics the demand of short intensive bursts of exercise followed by short recovery periods.
Muscular Strength - 1RM Bench press
Chest strength is integral to attacks.
Muscular Power - Standing long jump
This test is for power since a powerful lunge is crucial to an attack. The standing long jump will test the power of the athlete's glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves.
Flexibility - Overhead squat and Sit-and-Reach
These tests look at flexibility in all muscles (especially shoulder girdle, hamstrings and calves)
Balance - Star excursion balance test
The star excursion balance test mimics the balance needed for stability when lunging and allows to see what if any muscles imbalances exist from one side to the other.
Anthropometry - Girth measurements - Thighs, calves and biceps.
Girth measurements (especially the thighs, calves and upper arm) will help identify if muscles on the one side of the body is overly developed than the other.
