Explanation / Answer

Q1. What is qualitative data?

Qualitative data is extremely varied in nature. It can include any information which is not numerical in nature but can be captured or recorded. Qualitative data came about because of the dissatisfaction of some psychologists with the traditional approach to science since psychologists study people and quantitative data is not seen as an appropriate in studying the totatlity of human experience. Research based on a qualitative approach is exploratory and seeks to explain ‘how’ and ‘why’ a particular phenomenon, or behavior.

Q 2. Define cohort

A cohort is a group of people who share a common demographic or statistical characteristic over a certain period of time. The term is commonly used to refer to people that were born at a particular time although the group can be based on just about any common characteristic, like pay scale or geographic location & so on.

For eg., in a workplace environment, people belonging to Generation Y(the Millennial generation) and Generation Z are generaly assumed to be inherently proficient with many digital technologies. They are sometimes characterized as born digital since they grew up using personal computers and mobiles, smartphones or tablets etc. So they can be consdered as to be a part of cohort.

Answer3. According to psychoanalytic theory human developemnt is mainly determined by unconscious motives and drives. Freud's theory of development includes two important elements, namely the development of the structure of personality and changes in sexual drive. The two main drives about which psychoanalytic theory talks about is ego drive and sex drive. Ego drive concerns the need for food, water and oxygen, i.e. the things necesaary for survival. Freud's theory of development describes five life development stages, namely - oral, anal, phallic, latent, genital. And each stage is characterized by a particular form of the sexual drive.
