Question

Discuss why health communication is important. You must research and list at least one reference in your initial post (in APA).

Construct a story showing how health communication can be used. For example (you cannot use this example in your own post), how a medical professional might explain side effects from a medication to a patient. Specifically, how this medical professional might go about explaining the side effect such as starting off with explaining the medication, what it's used for, and then the side effects to the patients.

(Answer) The major thing about health communication is that the patient should be able to understand the things that the doctor says to them. Communication will have been effective when, the patient has understood what the disease entails, the effects of the medication, how to deal with the disease at home and how to simply recover.

Let us assume that there is a geriatric patient that has to have his medication cycle explained to him. This patient might be susceptible to forgetting the course of his medication since he is old and no longer has the best memory. In order to make sure that he has understood his medication, the doctor colour codes his medication for him. The patient now understands that the red pill is for the morning, the round white pill for the afternoon and the yellow pill is to be taken before bed.

In order to make sure that the patient remembers this cycle, the doctor draws a tiny chart with the picture of each respective pill near the word morning, afternoon and night and the number beside the pill. In this way, the doctor has communicated efficiently and his patient is taking the pills in a timely manner.

Furthermore, the word “sleepy” is written near his afternoon pill and “hungry” is written by his morning pill. This comprehensive chart helps the patient to understand exactly what the side effects will be and plans his day accordingly.
