Question
Take home portion: (5 pts) Integrative Metabolism Question: A young lady had heard from a friend that eating a carbohydrate only diet would prevent her from gaining weight because she would burn it all off and not gain any 'fat weight'. But she was also very sedentary, and did indeed try eating a lot of high carb foods. She ended up gaining a lot of weight in her fatty areas' (adipose tissue). Explain why, by describing her metabolic state after eating an all-carb meal including; 1) whether she is post-parandial or post-absorptive, 2) what hormones are active/inactive in her body, 2) what metabolic pathways are turned on (and turned down), in which organs and 3) what key enzymes in these pathways are activated or deactivated, and by what molecule(s). 4.Explanation / Answer
When some one takes an all carb diet, they end up with increased insulin secretion. This makes glucose transport to the liver where it is converted into triglycerides and stored in fatty tissue. Further secondly increase in insulin causes hypoglycemia and false hunger. Thus it makes a person Hain weight and fat deposition. She has postprandial as she is continuously taking glucose from carbs as source of energy as compared to post absorptive which depletes body sources. Insulin is extremely active and glucogon is inactive in her body. Thyroxine metabolic function might be inhibited. Adipose tissue generation is high. Lipogenesis occurs in liver. Protein formation also occurs. Enzymes of glycolytic pathway are activated. They are activated in the presence of glucose and depletion of ATP. Enzymes of fat formation are activated by insulin and other hormones.
