Question

Design a driver/decoder for a six-segment display described below (where e is the vertical
line and f is the horizontal line). It is to display one of the twelve symbols shown, where the
bold lines are to be lit and the dashed segments are not lit:

The first eight are directional North, Northeast, etc. The others are +, -, a diamond, and all
segments lit. The device to be designed has four inputs, w, x, y, and z, and six outputs, a, b, c,
d, e, and f. The 4-bit number shown in the diagram above is the input code, that is, the
device will take that four-bit number and light the appropriate segments. If one of the codes
not shown (1100, 1101, 1110, and 1111) is input, the display is to be blank (that is, all
segments unlit). The display requires a 1 on an input to light that segment. Treating each of
the outputs (a, b, c, d, e, and f) of your device as separate problems:
a) Draw the truth table showing combinations of the four inputs: w, x, y, and z along with
the values for each segment as the conventional form of a Sum of Products (SOP)
expression.
b) Find all minimum Sum of Products (SOP) expressions (sum of minterms) for each
segment.
c) Design for the segments e and f: (i) Karnaugh maps, and (ii) the circuits to implement
segments.
